Lebaran Ketupat Tradition in Indonesia
One of the post-Eid al-Fitr traditions in Indonesia is the celebration of “Lebaran Ketupat,” primarily observed by the Muslim community, especially in Java, one week after Eid al-Fitr or on the 8th of Shawwal.
Date for Lebaran Ketupat 2025:
As per the NU website, for the year 2025, if Eid al-Fitr falls on March 31, then Lebaran Ketupat will be on April 7, 2025. This celebration follows six days of voluntary fasting.
Origin and Significance:
Lebaran Ketupat is closely associated with one of the Nine Saints of Islam in Java, Sunan Kalijaga, credited with introducing ketupat to the region. This tradition originated during the era of the Islamic saints, known as Wali Songo, who integrated the existing practice of “slametan” to teach gratitude to Allah, charity, and fostering kinship during Eid.
Symbolism of Ketupat:
-
Symbol of Forgiveness: The Javanese word “ngaku lepat,” meaning “admitting mistakes,” symbolizes mutual confession, forgiveness, and reconciliation among Muslims when consuming ketupat.
-
Protective Covering: Made from yellow coconut leaves, ketupat signifies protection against harm.
-
Return to God: The square shape represents the principle of “kiblat papat lima pancer,” signifying that no matter where humans go, they will always return to Allah.
-
Cleansing and Prosperity: The white rice in the diamond-shaped casing symbolizes purity after seeking forgiveness and is believed to represent prosperity post-Eid al-Fitr.
The intricate weaving of ketupat reflects human errors, while its sanctity is mirrored in the clean white color when split in half.
